Thanked: 13Hi I'm Joe, nice to be here
Hello, I'm Joe, and I just discovered this website, and I think it's a very nice idea. I have always found it difficult to replace my hones or purchase quality razors, and have always had go through a barber. I'm not very internet savvy, and since learning the internet finding things has been much easier. I've been shaving with a straight razor since I've been shaving (1957?) and I thought that my generation was the last to use straight razors. I am so very happy to see such a large group of people with the same love. This website is complicated to me, if anyone could point me in the right direction here I would appreciate it, I want to explore.

Hey, Joe... where you goin' with that razor in your hand?
"Goin' down to shave ma' old woman... caught her messin' around, messin' around with a cartridge and a can..."
Can you hear it? Can you dig it!? Welcome to the forum!
Perhaps if you could provide some direction for us to help you?

Thanked: 13haha, thank you. I just want to get acquainted with the website, and maybe find some new toys to play with, and get rid of some old ones. I was reading in the hones area here, and can't believe there are so many options now. I've been using the same equipment for years, and years (and a lot more than that). Where can I find: parts, as in scales, rubbing compound?

Hi Joe and welcome to SRP! Maybe you could help us, you could very well be the one who has shaved with a straigth the longest here. I´m no spring chicken, but you started to shave with a straight razor two years before my elder sister was born and six before my birth

Thanked: 13Oh I'm sure I can't be the oldest one, there are thousands of people on this website! And I don't know what light I could shed, straight shaving is just a daily routine, and the one I've grown up with. I've occasionally used disposables, but prefer my straight. I only had one razor for at least the first twenty years, and two hones, and one strop, never needed anything else really. I come on this website and people are collecting dozens or hundreds of razors, hones, strops, and know every which-way about all of them. I've cleaned up a couple in my day, maybe make some wood scales out of boredom, but it's so time consuming...all you can probably take from me is this: don't overcomplicate this stuff, it's simple, and nothing should take more than 20 minutes in my opinion. That's honing, shaving, etc. oh, and always strop.

Thanked: 2209Hey Joe, welcome to SRP.
I tried to link to 2 threads but that function does not seem to work just now. So....
In the Workshop forum is a sticky that will give you a lot of info on razor/scale making and restoration including parts and supplies.
In the Wiki there is also a section devoted to the same subject.
Maybe someone else can post those links for Joe?
BTW, Joe, what hones do you use and about how often?Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Thanked: 13Thank you randy. I have at the moment a norton 1k/4k and a shapton 8k. I had an old barber's hone from my father at one time before my son broke it, probably about ten years ago. That was my go-to stone for touch ups for maybe 40 years. I usually use the same razor every day, and I have to do around 10-20 or so strokes on the shapton every couple months when my strop no longer does the trick. Sometimes I have to go down to the 4k for maybe 10-20 strokes, maybe twice a year.

Wow Joe, welcome to SRP! Where 'bouts in Chi-town are you? My family's all from up North of there (except for a couple actually in the city).
As a rookie in the world of straight shaving, I just learned something from you today, and want to say thanks.
The only advice I could give you is to click on the link up to the right that says "forum" and then scroll down the list of different "rooms" you can enter and read about everything from new razors to ancient hones. I too thought straight razor shaving was extinct until I found SRP (straight razor place). Glad I did.
Peace,
