Thread: Hello out there!

I've been putting this off trying to figure out what to say. There's not much to tell really. I'm a female looking for a better shave.

I live in rural western North Carolina in the Land of Bad Shaves where most men have faces like hedgehogs. The guys can get away with growing a mini-beard for a week out of loathing of razors but not us women. If we decide not to shave our legs people look at us like we have the plague. I'm tired of nicks and cuts from cheap modern razors so I'm here to find a better way. I can find no one in my area that knows anything about straight razors and, well, to tell the truth most men here don't know much about shaving. You can tell by looking at their faces. Why would I want advice about shaving from a guy that looks like he forgot to shave this week? Since starting my quest I've found out that most people in my area think that 1) shaving with anything actually sharp is suicidal, 2) that bad shaves are the norm and 3) that truly close shaves are a myth. Very few men here have any memory at all of what their fathers and grandfathers used to shave with. They assume that electric razors and disposables are a huge improvement over the straight razors and safety razors of earlier decades without having any proof. I don't remember seeing my grandfathers shaving but I do remember they had nice smooth skin and they always smelled good. They were also very huggable instead of prickly. I miss that.

So after 30 years of poorly shaved legs I'm here to find out why my grandfathers had smooth close shaves that these modern guys don't. What worked on faces 40 years ago must work on legs now.

There are a couple of ways you can do this.

First option is to get a safety razor (like the Gillettes our dad's used to use)
Then all you would need are some blades and a good soap/cream and brush, although you can use the can stuff.
This is much better than the modern multiblade shaves and is easier to do arm pits and other areas if you should so choose.

Second option of course is the straight razor
You would also need a brush and cream/soap and a strop to maintain the edge
This has a steeper learning curve to it
If you choose this route I would suggest a 5/8 round point razor, easier to get around the ankles and knees, but I still haven't figured out the arm pits by myself and it doesn't go near other area. I still would suggest a safety razor for areas other than legs.
