I have been DE shaving for two years and have recently started the straight razor journey.
Based in Japan for the next while and thanks to Larry at whippeddog.com - I got the gear (strop & balsa wood with oxides for honing ) without the debt !

So far my shaves are ok . Still finding the angle and using my left hand tricky . Over time (as many say ) it will become easier .

Over all I'm enjoying this new experience , of the old way to shave .

Thanks you have a great forum here !

    Cheers,

    Hey Scott, welcome.

I love the razor-on-tatami-shot. Done a few of those myself!

I'm in Yamaguch-Ken, whereabouts are you?

    Hello Jim ,

    I'm in Kagoshima-ken , muggy and pouring rain now ! My father in-law bought a L-6000
Suehiro ceramic stone . He has been sharpening knives all his life and is interested in helping me learn to hone ! Probably thinks I'm crackers for using a straight ! He of course has almost no facial hair and just uses an electric .

Would love to try and find some antique razors here , not sure if that is an easy task ?

    Cheers ,

Flea markets can have some good deals, or they can have overpriced junk...depends on the size of the market and your luck. Otherwise, you're either limited to Yahoo auctions or old school barbershops.

As for honing, I recently tried that 6000 Suehiro and it was a nice stone. You might need something finer (a Shapton 12 or 15 is a nice synthetic) for razors. One thing--don't get into Japanese natural hones. It will only lead to heartbreak... 8)
