Konnichiwa from Japan
Hello lads and lassies !
I have been DE shaving for two years and have recently started the straight razor journey.
Based in Japan for the next while and thanks to Larry at whippeddog.com - I got the gear (strop & balsa wood with oxides for honing ) without the debt !
So far my shaves are ok . Still finding the angle and using my left hand tricky . Over time (as many say ) it will become easier .
Over all I'm enjoying this new experience , of the old way to shave .
Thanks you have a great forum here !
Cheers,
ScottMirthing my way through life .

Hey Scott, welcome.
I love the razor-on-tatami-shot. Done a few of those myself!
I'm in Yamaguch-Ken, whereabouts are you?

Hello Jim ,
I'm in Kagoshima-ken , muggy and pouring rain now ! My father in-law bought a L-6000
Suehiro ceramic stone . He has been sharpening knives all his life and is interested in helping me learn to hone ! Probably thinks I'm crackers for using a straight ! He of course has almost no facial hair and just uses an electric .
Would love to try and find some antique razors here , not sure if that is an easy task ?
Cheers ,

Flea markets can have some good deals, or they can have overpriced junk...depends on the size of the market and your luck. Otherwise, you're either limited to Yahoo auctions or old school barbershops.
As for honing, I recently tried that 6000 Suehiro and it was a nice stone. You might need something finer (a Shapton 12 or 15 is a nice synthetic) for razors. One thing--don't get into Japanese natural hones. It will only lead to heartbreak... 8)

Scott,
Welcome to SRP and the small club of straight razor shavers in Western Japan (I'm in Takamatsu). Look forward to hearing about your adventures in shaving and acquiring razors. By the way, you’re lucky if it's just the in-laws here that think you've got a screw loose for using a straight razor. My brother is probably still shaking his head.
Kanpai!

Hello Joseph ,
Most of my friends thought I was crackers using a DE razor ! Managed to convert a couple , but doubtful anyone would jump to a straight from cartridges ! Hoping to keep the SRAD at a minimum . Well, until I can actually shave well ! Would love to do a wet shaving business in Japan , not really a market here - except for foreigners perhaps .
Cheers and thanks for the welcome !

Welcome to SRP!
Everybody in real life thinks i'm INSANE for using a straight razor. A coworker comes by every morning expecting me to have slit my throat.
SRAD is a wonderful mistress. Embrace her!
