    Default Beginner from MO

My decision to change to a straight razor began last night when my roommate came home with a safety razor. I asked him "Why did you get that?"

And he responded "I have just been tired of my electric and so I decided to get this. A better shave, and it's classier"

The first thing that went through my head and thus popped out my mouth was "Classier?!?! It's not like its a straight razor." Because I can still remember my Great Grandfather shaving with a straight razor in our old bathroom. He died long before I ever got to shave, but I remember thinking it was cool. My dad always wearing a beard, that is just always the first image that always came to me for shaving. But when I learned I was given a pack of the cheapest disposables and told to just throw it away when it started to hurt. Then when I had to shave everyday in the Army, the electric was just fast and easy and much better for being in the field in upstate NY in December.

So the other night when I was reminded that there were alternatives to electrics I went to Google. They led me here, I got to reading the beginners guide, the shopping list, the tips. I cannot remember the post, but it was the member who said "It feels like wiping your face with silk" that finished me off. So I bought a razor from the classifieds, a Genco 4/8ths and then another new Dovo 6/8ths from Vintage Blades as well as a cheap strop, and the Castle Forbes collection of oils and ungents and I am now avidly awaiting them to arrive. I am so pumped.

Welcome, don't be dismayed if your first shave doesn't quite feel like "wiping your face with silk", it will eventually feel like that. Good luck and keep us posted.
