Howdy from Texas!
Hello everyone!
I have lurked here off and on, and have used some of the info here to get better shaves from my cartridges, and I realized that I think it's time to
Go ahead and take the plunge.
I am undecided on where to go
From here but I am thinking a de razor, and go from there, I want to collect and restore straights and from that I'd like to be able to use one.
Anyway, thanks for all I have leaned so far, and all that I will learn from such a fantastic community.

Welcome to SRP.
Nothing wrong with starting out on the DE.
As you acquire all necessary knowledge on prep and lather et al, you will have a fine base.
It should make the transition to straight a somewhat easier task.
Keep us posted on your progress, and we will help out with what we can
Good luck!Bjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Thanks!
Right now I am stuck on how/where to make my purchases. I hate having to re purchase items which generally makes initial purchases more expensive for myself and I am finding it hard to get these things locally. (I'm in Houston) I wish I knew 20 years ago that playing with my old mans empty DE that i would need it one day.
The one thing that has kept me from going with the SE is my sideburns. If I understand this correctly that is the area to learn on, and I am not sure if I want to loose them. I guess I could. I don't want to loose the goatee though, and it's my hope that with either option I will be able to have cleaner, sharper lines on my facial hair.

If you are going for the DE, you can most likely find them at antique shops or yard sales for next to nothing.
That way your initial investment will be kept real low. And a DE will be useful for trips and stuff later on.
When it comes to sharp lines on goatees and sideburns, the straight is unrivaled. A DE will work well enough, but the straight is awesome for that kind of work.IMO.
When you start out it is usually recommended to start with the cheeks, sideburns or not. No need to remove them just to learn on the cheeks
Unless you are topping Mr. Presley in his prime(?) you will have plenty left on your cheeks to practice on!Bjoernar

Ha!
Thanks for the help so far it's been great.
And for the record, I do on occasion give mr. Presley a run for his money on hair and burns.
