Default A Frenchman in New York

    Hello everyone,

So here I am, Benjamin from France. I've used straight razor to shave (sometimes) or act gory movie scenes in my bathroom (more often) for a couple years now.
I've learnt almost everything on a french forum, the Coupe Chou Club but it's always wise to get your knowledge from several resources, so I've kept an eye on the Straight Razor Place for quite a while now.

Well, since I moved two weeks ago here in the States for as long as my American fiancée wants to stay here, I guess it's natural for me to join my adoptive country's main resource on that hobby that gathers us.

I have several razors not a lot though, but my daily, and almost exclusive setup is made up with my near wedge Thiers Issard, a Semogue 1250 brush, Martin de Candre shaving soap and my brand new, and already beloved Captain Smith's Bay Rum.

I'm pretty exclusive and I like to stick to one setup that earned my loving and to which I am sentimentally bound. And I think I found in those what I expect from the minutes I spend with myself every morning after a nice shower, doing something I love to do.

Well, I think I said it all,

See you soon on the forum,

    Benjamin

Welcome. I think you'll find the resource interesting and helpful. I know that most fora do things differently, but people here are very interested in alternative methods and money saving ideas no matter the source.

    Welcome to SRP.
I'm sure you will find this place a friendly and resourceful place to talk straights, or just hang
I look forward to seeing you around on here!
I agree with Gerrit, we all like to hear alternative ways on how they do things in other countries and in other shaving related foras!

Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

    Hey messieurs!

    Thank you for the welcoming

Well, you know, I don't think I'm the one who'll introduce new methods to the place. I stick to the tradition, except maybe for the use of the canevas. The thing is, it appeared to mess up my edge, most of the time, than refreshing it. Not that I felt any need of something to add to the leather for the daily care of my blades, but I long thought it was a great way to clean the edge and get rid of both whiskers and soap stuck to it. Finally, it appeared to me that the canevas was so hard to keep clean, if possible at all, that it was more of a nuisance. So finally, I dry the non cutting part of my razor on a towel, keeping the edge away, and then strop this last on my hand; very lightly.
As for the rest, well. Leather of course, on a strop, but I'm expecting a nice paddle to restore pretty soon (I both find it a better match for my classic European setup, and am also very curious of how it will affect my stropping technic - but of course so it messes it all up, its look wont prevent me from getting back to my good ol' strop). Anyway, the paddle we're talking about also has one aloes wood side, which I believe is very hard to find nowadays, and was the medium our ancestors used to spread strop past on...

I must say, a thing I'm pretty fond of on SRP and which I didn't find this well made on any other forum, is the Shave of the Day. Eye candy to me. Although I doubt I'll be able to participate quite often (not a lot of gear = monotonous + lame camera )

Anyway, have a good day, gentlemen!

    Bienvenue parmis nous Benjamin !

If only we knew you were coming, we would have asked you to bring a case of Martin de Candre with you
