Thanked: 0Hi
Hi guys
i am from that small island on the east coast of America and the west coast of Europe
looking to move from DE to a straight so will be asking lots of questions, im actually looking to go the whole hog and hone and restore.
first up the usual questions set up i am on a very tight budget, i have seen a few razors on ebay which im sure will be rubbish but are they ok to use. Kaiser is a name that keeps coming up or do any of you guys have a razor and strop combo that you no longer use that would help out a new guy ?

Thanked: 983G'day Jon, Check out the classifieds for some decent razors or you can also try whipped dog for cheap but serviable starter kits. Hope that is of some help and welcome to the forum mate. They're a great bunch of blokes here.

Thanked: 1936You will be $ ahead doing what Mick said, because after you would get a razor from the bay you would have to send it off to be honed. Learn to shave first, then get into honing...don't try them together as you will not really know what a shave ready razor is all about if you don't. Bare bones starting out is shave ready razor, a good strop, shave soap/cream, and a shave brush. You should be able to get all of this for around or under $100...but that price can quickly increase if you wish or have expensive taste. A good strop to start is a "filly" from www.ruprazor.com

Thank you and God Bless, Scott

Jon,
Welcome to SRP. Pleased to have you aboard.
+1 on the previous advice. Stay off of ebay until you have gained some knowledge of razors. If you are looking for a razor/strop combo check out any of the vendors who advertise here or Whipped Dog. You ought to be able to find something that is affordable for you.
You would also be advised to check the SRP wiki. It contains brands of straight razors that are acceptable and others that are not.

Thanked: 3LarryAndro is his name on SRP. Larry is a great guy, very helpful and $48 US gets you everything to get started less brush and the fat (oh the fat, sigh). Not sure about shipping to your "small island"..which I enjoy by the way Been a few years but I look forward to returning when I can.
I have also bought from Straight Razor Design and Don and Lynn were a pleasure to deal with as well. I guess it comes down to how much you want to spend getting started. Good luck!
