Thanked: 0new guy here
hello everybody! here's my intro...
i've never really had a full beard. i grow what i can as a chin strap and shave the rest of the stragglers. i also started shaving my head last year. i've kept it pretty short with clippers (0 or 1 guard) for the last 5 or 6 years and then got the bug to shave it all a couple winters ago. i'm not really consistent so it goes between a full shave and just really short.
however, my last couple head shaves made me quite angry. i've always used a headblade with gillette sensor cartridges and could never get the shave i wanted. the blades seem to dull so fast and they're expensive! (i'm a miser so that may have something to do with it too.) also, the norelco i use on my face just doesn't cut it either. which is hilarious since i'm quite far from a full, thick beard.
so here's where i've landed. been doing a lot of reading and researching the last week or so. i'd really like to just plunge in and get a straight razor but i'm also looking at the benefits of a DE. like i said, i'll mainly be doing head shaves with beard trimming (cheeks, upper lip, under bottom lip and neck) so i'd love to hear what everyone suggests. i'm on a budget (and a miser) so whippeddog.com really got my attention.
looking forward to conversing with everyone and if anyone is around nashville (TN), let me know. we live out in kingston springs just west of nashville.

Welcome to SRP.
I'm a fellow head shaver, so I get the frustrations from using cartridges and electric clippers up there.
A straight is IMO a much better solution for all kinds of shaving
On the frontpage of SRP, you'll find quite a few useful links for people just starting out.
Also, the entire wiki is a very useful baso of knowledge.
Other than that, should questions arise, we will do our utmost to help you out in any way we can
Good luck, and remember to have fun with this new ventureBjoernar
Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me over all these years....

Lots here are head shavers. Some use straights, others DE. The DE is a little easier at first and great for travel. I would suggest getting a feeling for a straight before bothering with your head; others have jumped in full force on the head shaving. I don't shave my head (lumpy), but have shaved others' head. I find that the biggest trick with your head is just like your face: get as much visibility as possible initially, shave prep, spend your time learning the direction of growth and contours intimately, shave prep, go slow, shave prep, start with a good sharp blade and did I say shave prep?
Most importantly, Welcome!
