Thread: Im a new member

Hi Men,
My name is Jimmy, I just got a straight edge for a gift from my mom, only to find out it was on your "not good" list. I still used it and a close shave I didn't get. Any ideas what I can do? I know Ill have to purchase a new one. I was so excited to receive it as I have wanted one for many years. Anywho, Im so glad to be part of this great place! Have a great day Gents.

I'm sorry to hear that your gift turned out to be not the best of shavers.
But still, kudos to your mom for trying
If I were in your shoes, I would probably pop into the classifieds here on SRP.
Lots of fine shavers to be had for a reasonable price.

Also, do check out the beginners tips on the front page and the wiki that are available here.
They should provide tons of info and answers you might have.

i was once told that the nuns in parochial schools back in the 40's and 50's used to smack a lefties hands cause it was a sign of the devil.

I'm left-handed. Almost all straight razors are symmetrical -- equally usable by left- and right-handed people. The only exception is Japanese kamisori, which are made in right- and left-handed versions.

which has some low-priced "shave ready" vintage razors and a "Poor Man's Strop Kit" which would be a good starting set.

My Dad's a south paw as well.
Don't feel too bad about your razor and for heavens sake, don't tell your Mum.
I purchased three off the don't buy it list before I found this amazing font of information.
I even shaved with them before I found out that you're supposed to get them honed before using them.
Since then I have learned to hone and have gotten two of them shave ready and the third is now in my toolbox as a knife.
After a while you will be able to hone it up yourself and, with any luck, show your Mum that you are using her gift.
