Thanked: 0Introducing... Me
Hi all
Lets see I live in MI and would like to learn the art of straight razor shaving. I'm really happy to have found this forum. Prior to it i was just about to drop around $500 on a whole kit but with the fear of ruining it my first strop.
Obviously I don't have a razor yet and would like any links or feedback on a good beginners blade and strop. Also any links or tips to the technique of using it.
I had told my barber that I wanted to get into straight razors shaving and he said they don't do as an effective job as the 4 blade disposables. Needless to say he is no longer my barber (and not cause of the razor talk).
So again hey all and look forward to this experience.

Where in Michigan are you? I am in southeast Michigan. Welcome to the group and have fun with all the reading/research. What kit did you get?

Some of the best deals on razors are found here in the classifieds. Also be sure to check out some of those who advertise here like SRD. They sell true shave ready razors.
Be sure to spend some time in the wiki (above) reviewing the shopping list and walking through everything. When it comes to straight razors research is your friend. Be sure to place yourself in the member map as well to encourage others in your area for contact. You will find that meeting a senior member, mentor or moderator; one-on-one or at a meet will teach you more than days on a site.
Take your time, learn what you can, enjoy your time here and most importantly: Welcome!

By all means use the classifieds, later once you know what you really want you can drop the coin on some nice stuff.

Check out Whippeddog.com. Everything you need for straight shaving minus the brush can be had for less than $50. Here's the link: http://www.whippeddog.com/straightra...n-fit-u-a0721a
Get a brush and soap and you'll be shaving for less than $75. Don't let anyone tell you that you "have to" buy a new blade for your first blade. Maybe it's just me, but I kind of think spending $160+ on straight shaving without knowing if you'll stick with it is kind of crazy. It's your money, but the sight unseen deal is a good deal. Larry is a stand up guy as well.
