Thanked: 0Hello from Indiana
Hello everyone,
I'm just now getting into the whole wet shaving world; just received my Torrey in the mail for a whopping $10. It seems to be in good condition, but i'd like to get it re- honed professionally to give me a base to work off of.
I've done a lot of research and, to be honest, I always ended up here during that learning process. I figured it was time to join up haha.
I did have a quick question, though: Has anyone used the following Chinese Hone?
New Chinese Water Hone / Waterstone for Straight Razor | eBay
I've heard of people using Chinese 12ks for touch ups, but that price really makes me weary.

Hey. Welcome to the forum! I have a Chinese 12K and its a great finisher stone. Theoretically, it could get a razor shave ready, but it would take forever. I got mine for around $18USD. it works great as a finisher, but any stone could be great for anyone. It all depends on your style and what you like. Once you get really into it and good at honing, you could always pick up sone others and see the slight differences and decide based on personal preference.
As for a bevel setting hone and edge setting hone, I go with the Norton 4K/8K grit stone that you can find on Amazon. They have kits with the 220grit/1Kgrit stone and the 4K/8Kgrit stone combo for about $110 USD. Read about lapping the stones and schamfering the edges, too. If you have any questions, feel free to post back or message me privately. Good luck and welcome again

I have two of those chinese stones and they are not all created equal. The one I got off of ebay for about $20 that looks like that one is a great finishing stone, but another one I bought from Woodcraft took some lapping to get it right, though it was a much bigger stone. Both seem to be good finishing stones for honing and like facial dirt said, they could get a razor shave ready if the edge is already there and just needs touching up. Most , myself included, like the norton 4k/8k combo stone for setting the bevel and edge on your razor. Also keep in mind the size of the stone you are getting for $12 is not all that big. So be sure to get the measurements of the stone you are buying. I hope this helps a little. By the way, one of the stones I bought was from that vender and it is one of my favorite finishing stones.

Thanked: 0Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to get a picture of my Torrey up soon, but for now here's a picture of a Pike Swaty I just picked up off ebay. Should I be concerned with its color? I've never seen a Swaty with a yellowish tint like that.
