Thanked: 0Hi from south florida
I came to SRP in hopes to expand my knowledge on shaving with a straight razor. A few years ago after I randomly became interested in this i asked my barber if he had any info or advice on the topic. He told no barbers he knew of were still using a real straight razor. Little did I know the next time I visited him for a cut he offered me his old razor he found lying around his house.
I'm not to sure that it is of high quality even though it was not listed on the SRP list of junky razors not to buy. The blade reads Special with some scroll work around it in large letters etched into the blade. The holdable portion of the blade reads W.H. Morley & Sons CLOVER BRAND Germany. I was delighted to say the least when i received this.
For some reason I left the razor untouched for around 2 years in my closet. That brings us to about 2 weeks ago when I pulled it out and started tinkering. I am a fairly avid "knife sharpener" so I do own a 1200 and a 6000 grit water stone. I managed to hone what I think is a respectable edge. I bought some cheap Col. Conk soap mug and brush did a quick stropping on a leather belt hanging in my closet and as you may already know I was disappointed to find its not sharp enough for my face.
Certainly I need to invest in a strop and continue absorbing all of the wonderful know how from this forum.

I have two Morley & Sons. I am happy with both. Used one last night, for a great shave.
I can sharpen a knife also, but razors are different animals. I would get a 4000/8000 Norton and a finisher, Shapton 16000 & strop, JMO.
Keep reading and watching the videos. Get with someone in the area who can hone and learn.
Don't rush the experience.

Here is a link to the search screen for SRP members, just fill in the location field with either a major city or state to find people in you area. There are 110 with a location of "Florida".

Welcome to SRP and you have a fine razor there. Don't be discouraged about not being able to sharpen it like a knife, razors are a different animal altogether to sharpen. There are plenty of folks here who can guide you toward honing a proper razor, but I recommend sending it off to a honemeister first and learning how to shave with it before learning to hone it. Good luck and happy shaving!
