Hey all
My name is Charlie. New to the group. Live in Reno now after traveling the world with both the US Marines and Royal Netherlands Marines for 26 years. Shaved for about a year with a straight when I first entered service so it has now been about 30 years. Tried it again the other night and when I was finished it looked as if some one threw a stray cat in my face! Guess it Is not like riding a bicycle.

Thanked: 2204Welcome back to the work of straight razors!
Sorry to hear about your reintroduction but you have found the best forum for straight razors on the Internet. Be sure to read the Wiki, it has a ton of info that is derived from our collective experience.
Tell us a little about your razor and where your located. We may be able to find some people in your area that can give you a hand with restoring the sharpness to your razor.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Thanked: 275I suspect it _is_ like riding a bike.
If you knew how to shave once upon a time, I'd bet your razor has become dull. Dull razor ---> extra pressure ---> cut-up face.
How was it stored between your last use, and now?

The straight razor that I used way back then came out of a US military barber kit from supply, long gone. I used a newly purchased Dovo that I stropped first. Of course my stropping technique I am sure needs some work as well. Even with the initial slashing, when done I felt the same sense of accomplishment as the first all those years back. I also have a Boker I purchased from an antiques dealer hear in town that I will need to put a good hone to prior to it's use.

If it is a new Dovo right out of the box it probably needs honed. Either check the classifieds under member services or maybe one of the guys near you can help you out. Welcome home and welcome to SRP!
