Newbie from New Jersey

Hey I am Josh from New Jersey. I have been interested in using a straight razor for some time. For my birthday my buddy got me two razors out of the blue. I know I still need a strop, a brush and shaving soap however, I have a few questions. Firstly, I do not know if they are shave ready. The one I am pretty sure isn't but I am not sure about the other. Secondly, I don't know anything about the razors one is a Fromm Redhead 50 and the other is Cutlery World First Class 7802. If anyone could give me a hand that would be great.

Josh - Welcome to SRP. You have two very nice razors there and a very good buddy who gave them to you. They will both make excellent shavers, but should be honed first to ensure maximum performance. You can find a list of good craftsmen here who will put your razors in tip-top shape and get you off on the right foot. You will need a strop to maintain the edge and you will be in business.

They look great, as Walt said. The first class seems to have an edge anomaly, which could be honed out. It might just be some dust on the bevel in the pic. The edge on the Fromm looks nice. Great start! They should require little work to make excellent shavers.

Josh, Welcome. Its a journey w/ a learning curve, but there's a reason all of us get excitable about it. Shaving will no longer be an annoying chore but an indulgent event. You'll find lots of help here. The quality of the help is great, and the attitudes are superb. All the guys have been incredibly patient w/ my learning. I'm sure they will be with you also.

Both blades look like excellent shavers. I'm sure alot of guys here are drooling over one or both. Having them shave ready is as important as everyone says. While I'd gladly do the work for only the return postage, I think a new shaver is better served by having a pro do their edges. It just eliminates any possibility of a nagging doubt about the quality of the edge.

I'm assuming you're spending time on the wiki, how-to's and such. The first shave thread is on the home page of SRP. The other skills needed right up front is making lather and stropping. Stropping is the big one. The best thread I've seen on it is Glen's 'Beginners Tips' from 3/11. Its so good, I keep it copied down & send it to all guys curious about str8 shaving. Its worth going through several times, and contains Al's vids about the all-important 'flip' at the end of the stropping stroke. I sacrificed 5 strops for lack of this detail. They still squirm when I enter the room.
