Thanked: 0Hey everybody!
New guy here from New Jersey. I'm looking to get into DE shaving and wanted to gather some information before I buy some stuff.

Thanked: 275Budget?
"Stuff" could be anywhere from a vintage Gillette from a flea market or antique store (or eBay)(or the Classifieds here), to some very pricey German or Japanese razors. "Blade samplers" are sold by several vendors -- good to get you started.
Any DE razor will cut your beard, if the blade is sharp. Personal preference is unpredictable.

PS -- that's leaving out choice of soap and brush. Those, too, have wide price ranges.

Thanked: 0I'm on a pretty tight budget as I'm out of work right now. I have a ton of vintage Super Speeds in my watchlist right now. I'm also watching a tweezerman badger hair brush. I haven't put much consideration into what shave soap or cream to get.

Thanked: 14I'm a bit north of you...Warren County.
I ordered an Edwin Jagger DE89 for my son a few months ago. Because of a recent abdominal surgery, I haven't been able to stand long enough to shave with my straights, so I borrowed my son's EJ. I enjoyed the shave so much that I recently bought one for myself.
You can get started with a good DE for less than $100. The EJ DE89 was $35 from Bullgoose Shaving, a couple different packs of blades for around $2 each, a tube of C.O.Bigelow cream from Bath & Body Works for $10, and a Frank Shaving brush from Ebay for about $30 (or a Tweezerman from Amazon for around $15).
The setup I just described has become my go to DE shave...my DE89 with Astra blades, C.O.Bigelow cream (sometimes you can catch a sale and get 3 tubes for the price of 2) and my Frank Shaving finest badger brush. I finish with alum, followed by lime Skin Food, then a splash of Clubman.
