    Default Hello from Southern California

    Hello from Southern California!

I've just completed my third straight shave--and it was not bad, in fact, quite nice! I do have a pretty thick beard in places, and sort of had to push the blade through these areas. My razor had been professionally honed, so guess I need to work on my technique! My goal is to get to that point where the whiskers just wipe away ("Squeegeeing" away the whiskers, is how I think this has been described).

I like this new hobby and am looking forward to reading many interesting posts!

Welcome! I'm also pretty new to wet shaving...and I'm also in SoCal. Your technique will improve as will your preparation, which is at least half the battle. Go slow and have fun!

Are you near LA or SD? If the former, you might check out Ross in downtown LA, on Broadway. They're an old school barber supply and knife store with lots of goodies, new and old.

I'm in SB (Santa Barbara) so closer to LA than SD. I don't travel south that much, but sounds like I will have to check out Ross for sure! Thanks for the tip and pleased to meet you!

    Hi there and welcome.

It sounds like you are on the right track. It does take some time and experience to bring together the proper blade angles, skin stretching and right strokes but when you do its very satisfying. As for the whiskers being wiped away, I'll believe that when I see it. There is usually a little "pull" with the initial with the grain pass but nothing major.

Yes, there are some very interesting posts to read I hope to see you getting involved in them too!
    Regards
    Nic

Thanks for the reply! I'm finding the chin to be the most difficult area--and where I feel the most "pull." The one thing that I thought would be impossible, using my left hand for the left side, turned out to be OK!
