Thanked: 0Hi From N. California!!
Hi everyone! What a great site! I've been using a straight razor for 11 years. I have two that I use regularly and another I use to cut patches for when I shoot black powder.
What got me into using a straight razor is an interesting story. I was having some issues with using a safety razor and having razor burn and breakouts. I went to my doctor who is a Filipino doctor and he said if I wanted to shave with no breakouts and minimal rash use a straight razor. It took me a little while to research out how to use one and after two weeks of some scary moments I got the technique down.
So what do I use? I have my father's razor which is a Barber's King and I use one I bought online from France. Both work well and I am happy but there is always room for a sharper more refined shave.
I stumbled upon this site looking for sources for strop dressing and whatnot.
Quick question...aftershave balm...I had some Burt's Bees Bay Rum Aftershave Balm and I can't find it anywhere. What is a good alternative?
Thanks!!

Welcome aboard, I too find straight shaving less irritating than others. Sounds like you know what you are doing already but just wade in and ask any questions.
I don't use ASB myself but I understand that many people are very fond of Nivea, there was a thread about good value balms a few months ago http://straightrazorpalace.com/post-...reak-bank.htmlRegards
Nic

Greetings! I live in Petaluma. If you ever want to organize a NorCal meet-up I'm in!
I heard that Burt's Bees discontinued their shave cream. Maybe it's the same with their balm. I'm using a sandalwood that I got from Crabtree & Evelyn. I like it.
Enjoy!

Thanked: 0I grew up in Peteluma when I was younger...I lived by the airport. I love my razors. What I do is I got to antique stores and I ask for razors. I examine the spine and if the look ok I'll clean them up and use them then give it to a friend of sell it. Antique stores have some good finds. A friend of mine found a like new razor with real tortoise shell.

Thought I might as well post my introduction in an already established NorCal thread.
After years and years of using the Gillette Sensor Excel (disposable multi-blades razors), I switched over to using a safety razor only 2 years ago and love it. For the past year, I've been trying to learn as much as I can about straight edge razors and handling and caring for them before I purchase one. As a recent college student (currently unemployed), I am a little hesitant to start off with a really expensive straight edge razor, and am thinking about buying a vintage razor and restoring it myself. I signed up for the SRP forum to learn as much as I can!
BTW, I live in Sacramento.
