Hey Ritchy you have come to the right place!! Check out the classifieds here for GREAT deals on ready to go razors!! Read the wiki and ask questions when you have them! I was in your boat not to long ago and the members here have been a HUGE asset in the learning curve of this art!! But once you start it will be hard to turn back!

Ritchy, Welcome.
I would agree - you've hit the 'mother lode' of information and help for learning the old art. If you choose to go w/ the str8, your shaves will no longer being an annoying chore, but an indulgent event you get to enjoy daily. You can get a fine shave from a DE, but it won't last as long. The amount of info here can make your head spin, so to focus on just what it takes to get going, I send some form of the following to guys wanting to dive in:
For the guy beginning, the 3 skills needed right up front. The shave itself - which has the 'first straight shave' link on the home page of SRP. The 2nd thing is making lather. The best thread I've seen on this is from Mantic.

How To Build And Apply Traditional Shaving Lather - YouTube
Finally, the biggest and perhaps the most critical skill is stropping. I sucked at it. Strops still run screaming when I enter a room.
*
The best thread I've seen on the topic is Glen's. Its worth going through repeatedly, and be sure to see Al's (afdavis) vid on the all-important 'flip'. That's where all the carnage happens.

Something not available to all members is your location. I don't know what it is about that state, but you have a very high concentration of very skilled guys down there. 'Not just in str8 shaving, but most areas requiring skill w/ the hands. There's a google map page on this site that shows the location of other members in your area. You may feel a bit awkward, but I highly recommend connecting w/ these guys. It can save you alot of time, heartburn, and carnage. If they have an area meet-up down there - make every effort to attend. You can learn more in a day than months of reading/research.
'Hope to hear more from you. I'm still dying to hear of an old friend's first str8 shave. You'll find nothing else can match the experience and the quality of shave.
Best of luck, Ritchy. If you're at all like others starting (myself included), we'll soon be reading excited posts about amazement with the blades and the best shaves of your life. Enjoy it all, and have fun doing it!

A warning:
. . . Most of us are spending more money on straight razors, soaps, hones, etc, than we ever spent on Gillette cartridges.
It's _possible_ to be a truly low-budget shaver, but we get tempted by all the goodies available.
The beginner's Wiki's are excellent.
