    Default Hello form Colorado

    Salutations and Hello Kind Folks.
I have wanted a straight razor for years, and now that I have two good ones I love the ritual of it, more than I ever thought I would - making the soap lather up, the smell of a good soap, stropping and finally shaving - I see now why and how we could easily end up with many razors. They are useful pieces of art, I like the old razors - something magical about shaving with a piece of metal that was formed and sharpened over a hundred years ago or so (and of coursed honed many times since).
I got my first two good straight razors within the past two months: 1) an M.J. Henckels (from ebay) which was honed by Lynn and 2) one made in Solignen bought from a member here, which is a fantastic razor, came shave ready, Both have been wonderful little 5/8ths beauties - but wish I had taken the advice here and bought from someone here first. I did get two other horrible razors (beauty and the barber) simply because it came with a cheap/beginner quality strop.

Now That I have rambled on far too long, it is wonderful to be here. I am currently living simply and well in Central City, Colorado. I hope that everyone is enjoying the learning and delight of straight razor shaving.

so again, Hello and Thank you to all new and senior members from whom I have received nothing but the best quality services and products along with the wealth of information they kindly and freely share

    drayroseman,

SRP is a wonderful forum. It's done a world of good for me, too. Without this place, I would have never been able to successfully shave with a straight.

I think I might be struggling more than some here. I've seen people post with join dates similar to mine experiencing BBS shaves and posting about them. I get DFS most of the time, but I can see the improvement over time. My Achilles’ tendon is my chin, right under it and to the sides (where a goatee would want to live). I'm having better success with advanced techniques in the wiki, knowledge others were kind enough to share and document here.

    Welcome to SRP.

    -Mark

And there was one fellow on here, who has since gone, who posted that he got a total BBS shave on his first shave ever. I think his BBS shave might actually have been a BS shave. I think you are right on schedule. After 11 months, I'm still finding something new every shave. The chin has become much easier and fun for me ever since I stopped treating it as a separate area and instead just shave down over it, changing the angle as I do. The same goes with the XTG and ATG strokes. It may take time before you are comfortable with that maneuver. If so, don't rush it. It took me over three months to get that down.

Hi drayrosemanm, I didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Ace, the problem with my chin is the hair is very thick, coarse, and lies very flat. I purchased some razors from Rob (Pinklather) and won the October giveaway, so I had three shave ready blades. Two of them I've since dulled. I held the square-tip that I purchased from Rob in reserve hoping that there would come a time when my shaving skills would be good enough to where I could really see results from a sharp razor.

I must have had unusual foresight because I used that last evening and I received the best shave ever so far (although I still gave myself a minor nick). On my chin, though, I have to resort to buffing ATG. I got at DFS out of that in that area and I was very pleased. I can see how things are getting better and better.

I have thought about that technique you mentioned, just shaving in one fairly continuous motion angling the blade properly as I go. I'm not there yet, but I see a time where I might be.

In any event, a DFS beats a BS shave anytime!

shaving is most likely gonna be easier for me, I don't go clean shaven, got that chinstrap/goatee thing on my face. and I never tried to shave with BBS razors - just practiced stropping. the may make good boot knives though :-)
