Thread: Greetings from Wildcat Country

Hello All,

My names David Sage and I joined up because I am a college student and don't want to spend money on razor cartridges anymore! I am looking for my first razor currently and have been dabbling with using soaps for my lather so that when I find my razor I can get a quality shave. I'm planning to start scouring local antique shops to find a possible candidate. I have two thoughts however, what should I look for in a vintage razor and when I find it where can I send it off to be professionally honed/cleaned and put back into serviceable condition. Any thoughts and comments are appreciated. Stay Classy!

Welcome to SRP. For your first, razor I would recommend checking the classifieds here or with some of the vendors here, that way you'll know your "new" razor will be shave ready. If you opt to buy one from some local shop, members who offer honing services can be found in the classifies as well under "member services." Be sure to read the helpful info in the Beginners section and post any questions you have. Enjoy and have fun.

As soon as I made my account I sat and read through all the info on the Beginners section. I saw a few razors on here and now is the perfect time to ask, is some minor rusting pits anything to worry about? As long as they aren't on the edge I don't imagine that they are especially since it's a first razor and all but I saw a couple for about 50 bucks and they had some minor rust on them so I continued my search. Thoughts?

Minor pitting is no problem as long as there is none on the bevel.

Welcome to SRP mate.
You are doing your homework it seems, a professionally honed razor is the way to start out in this hobby.
Check out the classifieds on here, I'm sure you'll be able to find a reasonably priced razor that is shave ready.
If you buy one that is not, then check the members services for someone near you to do the honing for you!

I'm still on the lookout for a vintage first razor on here but I found another thread of a first timer who went all in with his first set so I looked into it, this is what I have tentatively decided on if I absolutely cannot find anything to suit my needs:
