Thanked: 0Greetings from "The Old North State"
Hey there fellas!
So I just stumled upon this group this evening while looking for any and all insight available for a guy who's pretty new to the straight razor shave. I had always been in love with the idea of a straight razor and the art & skill it would surely require to pull off the fine shaves I got when stationed overseas years ago. I kinda gave up on the notion, you know...life's too busy, constantly whizzing by, I could never find anything in stores, and I never thought to check out straight razors online. Fast foward to about a year and a half ago, I kept thinking, "I really wanna get a straight razor and figure this thing out....they're so darn cool". I mentioned those same sentiments aloud one day last year, and no kidding, 4 or 5 days later while shopping for Christmas right after Thanksigiving, I came across "The Art of Shaving" store in Charlotte. I had no idea that there were so many of us out there! I had no idea how expensive it all was! But, I was bound and determined to make it happen somehow. Secretly I hoped someone would notice how stoked I was about the store and how much I had been talking about the whole "old school shaving" thing. Christmas came....nadda. I kinda gave up the notion of getting anything for awhile, because I just couldn't justify spending that kind of money on myself at the time. I'm sure several of you guys know what I'm talking about. Sure, ladies can spend hard-earned money on spa days, mani's, pedi's, hair appointments, etc., but I just have never been the kind of guy to easily part with money, particularly when it comes to several hundreds of dollars at one time to be spent on me. Anyway...long story short, another year came and went, and then on Christmas, the special lady in my life surprised me with essentially the works from "The Art of Shaving". New Thiers Issard razor, badger-hair shave brush, mug, cream, oils, etc., etc....I know they say you're supposed to wait and practice until you can "shave a balloon without popping it". Yeah. That didn't happen. Shaved as soon as I got home. I am proud to say, I have shaved about 10 times since (I don't have to shave daily for my job) I got my new "toys" and I only cut myself twice. Not even that badly. Here's to small miracles, right? Still getting the hang of it, but I'm getting more confident while (most importantly) not getting "cocky" with a sharp implement around my throat.
So that's kind of it, in a nut shell. I just randomly came across this site, and so glad I did! Cool to know there are more dudes like us out there! Thanks for reading, and being so very welcoming. I'm excited about meetin' you all!
