Texas
Good afternoon gentlemen.
New member here from Texas.
25 years old, been shaving with a straight razor for two years now, but I have not been able to do my own honing. I love the entire shave process, and now that I've got my own stones I HOPE to get better at honing and re-sharpening my blade as my first attempt was a failure. I only wish I found this forum sooner.
I am also terrible at stropping, it seems to me each time I strop, I actually get the blade more dull :\ I guess I need more work behind the scenes, I'm great on stage though

Jorge,
Welcome to SRP! If you haven't already read through the WIKI, now Library, you'll find a lot of useful info. Also the search function is very useful. Straight Razor Place Wiki - Straight Razor Place Wiki
On your honing, setting the bevel correctly is about 90+% of honing. You should be able to cut arm hairs, individually, with little to even no resistance. Until then, moving on to a higher grit is pretty much fruitless. You'll find loads of threads on the subject and lots of folks to help!! Enjoy and have fun!!
Regards,
Howard

Thanks a million Howard.
I'm going to re-lap the 220 tomorrow and try it again I'll put more effort into it and try to closet some of the excitement that I think got me in a rush the first go-round. LOL

Jorge, 220 is pretty aggressive for setting the bevel. Usually that grit is used to remove a lot of steel when trying to hone out chips, etc. in the blade. Most initial bevel setting is done with a 1000 grit stone, and sometimes a higher grit if the edge needs just some modest attention. What hones/grits do you have available?
Edit: I put 1000k instead of 1k. I do that all the time.Last edited by SirStropalot; 02-18-2012 at 10:13 PM.

Do you have a 1k stone?? I'm no professional but 220 may be too corse unless you need to remove a chip or heavy restore work.

Thanks guys. I do have a 1k, so I'll start with that when I go at it again.
I have all Nortons. 220/1000, 4000/8000, Lapping Stone, and Prep Stone.
Thanks for the advice.
