Thanked: 0Ki ORa- Hello n G'day
Hi all,
I'm from Aotearoa N.Z.
Just acquired my first straight, joy. As I know very little and you all have the collective wisdom of the ancients, I though you could tell me your thoughts and any info or suggestions you may have. Can you date these? is this a good razor? anything. I have just photographed her ("her"? I haven't name her yet) So she needs a GOOD clean up thats for sure but after reading much on SRP and from a novices eye she has straight scales that are not to nicked and no cracks and straight spine, no pitting (even though those photos appear to have a little I'm pretty sure it just surface) Got it for a around $33USD from an lady selling her dads stuff. (he'll be happy to know it gone to a good home- I'll treat her right)
Anyway Hi and and any replies and knowledge would be appreciated. Cheers and E noho Ra.

Woah, Bengalls are notoriously great shavers!!
Get that pro honed and it will give a lifetime of great shaves!!!
It could use some cleanup, but doesn't have to be unless you want it. I have many that look like heck, but shave like heaven.
Good find, enjoy it in good health!!
M-- Any day I get out of bed, and the first thing out of my mouth is not a groan, that's going to be a good day --

Thanked: 68Haere Mae
Greetings & Welcome
There seems to be a slowly growing number of Kiwi's here.
Your razor looks to be in fairly good condition.
If you're just starting out I wouldn't be too concerned with getting 'her' looking like new. As long as the rust is gone some patina just adds to the character of and old and well loved tool.
I found the easy first step for cleaning was to use a kitchen scotchbrite pad
and some some sunlight soap.
You'll need to find someone to hone her for you after she's had a clean up.
Scott is in Auckland and does honing. You can email or PM him.
EisenFaust is another Kiwi who is doing some lovely restorations and I would presume honing too.
The House of Knives has a guy in their Auckland store who does a nice job too. If you aren't near either of their stores you could probably post it to them.
A you start along the road on your journey toward straight shaving remember to go slowly and read all the great advice here at SRP.
Enjoy

Welcome to SRP & I'd agree with cleaning any loose rust off the blade . You don't want it transferred to your strop eh.
The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

G'day and Welcome Bro . The Bengall looks to be in pretty good nick (all bar a bit of rust).
If you have any questions just ask.
Happy Shaving.
