Thanked: 0Hello from Burlington, KY
I am new to the art of Straight Razors and recently ordered a setup from Lynn @straightrazordesigns. I am an avid woodworker and I was drawn to this for several reasons. I think I like the historical aspect of it, and I also like the way that it renews our culture while eschweing consumerism. I feel like I have a legup since I already know how to sharpen, but I am quickly learning that there are some differences in the process. I have gotten a few decent shaves so far, and I am enjoying the relaxing start to my day.
One thing that shocked me the other day was a conversation with my father who is 78. I had asked him if he had any straight razors laying about and he did have two of them. I told him that I would like to have them as I was learning to shave with a straight razor and it would be nice to have one with family history. The shocking part was that he told me that he had never learned to shave that way! I assumed that he shave with one, but he said when he started shaving safety razors were popular so he used them instead.
I am looking forward to seeing him this weekend and getting my hands on these razors which were my grandfathers.

Welcome to SRP. You went a great way, getting a setup from Lynn. As everyone will tell you honing a razor is not like sharpening a chisel or saw. but it can be rapidly learned. Good that you have some razors with family history heading to your collction. i regulary shave with some of my grandfather's straights as well a some of my dad's.
jimBe just and fear not.
