Every time....?
try for two or three shaves.

Depending on the blade you may like the second+ shave better
than the first.

I have heard of folk taking a cork to the blade. They run
the edge lightly across a wet cork and tell me that it removes the bite.

Do not worry about the thickness of the lather. The brush will
be full enough to add more as you go. I find that the initial
lathering is bested by the second more often than not. Because of
this I lightly shave/ wipe the first lather off just reducing my beard
a bit then I test my face with my hand feeling for missed patches etc
then apply more lather and fix the bits that need fixing. The second
visit to the brush seems to produce a smoother finer lather.

We are all different so try all the sane suggestions to see what fits your face.
In the end it is your face and your whiskers....

BTW: on latherin' play with your brush and shave soap. I found that
by the time I had worked myself half way through a puck of Williams ($1.50)
adding too much water, too little, this that upside down all ways I had learned
enough about making a shave lather that my more expensive shave soaps
began to jump up and lather. You can make and wash many latherin' tests
down the drain -- but that many shave tests on your face would result in hamburger.

it is all fun so enjoy.
