Thanked: 0Hello from Alabama!
I am new to straight razor shaving, but I am finding it very rewarding and relaxing. I have been reading various forums and the one thing that rings very true is taking the time to learn the art of straight razor use. I have been shaving with a straight razor for about 3 months and am just getting to the point that my current razor is outperforming the modern safety razor. My only new razor purchase has been a Dovo, but I have bought several quality razors on ebay. Be cautious, some of the stuff on ebay is not worth trying to refurbish. Lucky for me, I have been sharpening knives for years and have been good at it. Now I can take an old razor and use my water stone set and create a great edge on a blade if the steel is in decent shape.
I'm glad to be here and am looking forward to learning and sharing!

Thanked: 0Restored Blades
I have had some limited success with a few blades. I will post a few pictures in the next couple of days. I have an Imperial brand that shaves the best of the bunch (as well as my shave ready Dovo). I may send a couple off for a professional hone so I can compare the bevel set. I have 2 others that shave pretty well that I have honed as well. Lucky for me they were all basically inexpensive ($20 or less), so it was no great loss if they didn't work out. A couple of the razors I bought needed new scales, and after a couple of installs, I found that not to be too difficult. Here again, I just bought the $10 plastic scales and they work ok. I would like to step up to better scales, but I want to master that before spending the bucks. Overall I am finding this to be an interesting hobby. My friends and family are really impressed that I shave with a straight razor and are amazed at the quality of the shave I have been able to attain (I'm even surprised myself!).

Hello from Huntsville, AL. Welcome to SRP. I'm a "noob" as well, but have a horrible case of "RAD" and have been assembling a collection of str8's. Just bought my first two "restoration" project razors and should have them soon. There's a "meet up" every once in awhile in North Alabama and everyone's welcome!

Hi I am from Tuscaloosa. I just joined a few weeks ago. Glad to see some Alabama people on here. I just go my first restoration project as well. I have been enjoying using the straight to shave. Not as difficult to do as I had imagined. I also have been honing my own using some waterstones I have. I am looking to get a 12k stone. I am using a 6k now and find I get a good shave. Not really sharp enough to go ATG but fine for everything else.
