I've used them all with fine results. Most here will recommend soap or creme with a mug and brush.

I would suggest soap in a mug or shave cream. Hopefully you have a strop as well. Before you get all antsy in your pantsy and try to shave...READ. Read some more, watch youtube videos on shaving, stropping, lather making and ask questions. then read some more and watch some more videos. Then shave. it is hard to resist the urge to dive in, but it really does make a difference

Thanked: 485Hi,
You're going to get a LOT of differing opinions on all that. I find creams easier to use than soaps, so I'd recommend creams rather than soaps for a beginner. I get excellent results from several creams, but, in order, these are my favourites at the moment:
Top Secret (excellent lather, the best glide I'd come across, cheap)
O Melhor (excellent lather, excellent cushion)
Truefitt and Hill Trafalgar (excellent lather, strong, pleasant scent)
C O Bigalow (excellent lather, nice scent)
CarlStranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?

I was stuck in the office today, hadn't been able to shave, so I decided to put my face where my mouth was and see how minimal a shave I could perform:
Soap: Dawn Dishwasher Soap
Brush: Hands
Mug: None
Razor: Schick Quattro, year old cartridge
Prep: None
Shave: Two pass, WTG/ATG
Result: BBS, no nicks, cuts or razor burn
Is this the Holy Grail of shaving? Nope, but it worked just fine.

The question of face prep is totally personal preference. The best guidance is in the Wiki on the this site and the postings. It might be best to start with what you are familiar.
