Hello all. I've been interested in taking up straight razor shaving for a while now, and I finally bought a razor. Its been a slow and steady learning experience to say the least. I have one question though...I recently cracked one of the scales on my razor and was wondering if it will affect the functionality of the razor? I'm not overly concerned with aesthetics at this point, so I'd like to keep using the razor but only if it isn't going to affect performance. Any insight would be appreciated.

    Welcome to SRP!
glad to see that you have started on the straight and narrow path. when you say "cracked" do you mean "broken" or is there just a "crack" in it? if it is broken you will be wanting to get it fixed. whetether or not it is safe to use is your decision. i would replace a broken scale for the safety of the blade and because i would not like it flopping about when i strop or shave. there are many vendors on the forum who will either replace your scles or sell you replacement ones that you can put on yourself.
please tell us more about your shaving gear and post some pictures... we like pictures.

    enjoy,
    jim
