    Default Hey from CA

Hi all. This is a great site, glad to have found it. I'm looking to learn how to straight razor shave.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to serve (Army) with one of the best all around guys God did put on this earth. Carson was his name and he was passionate about shaving this way and would treat those of us who were willing to a great shave from time to time.

Carson's now gone, along with a number of fine individuals, all real friends/brothers and my mind has been constantly taking me back to those shaves and chit chat that made Afghanistan somewhat bearable at times.

I figured that I'd buy a kit and start shaving with a straight razor myself. Kinda like therapy. Taking a long careful shave and thinking about the good people we've lost is the least I could do to pay respect I figure. Could have been me a whole lot of times. I'm very lucky and humbled.

Before I buy anything, I figured I'd do some research and that's what brought me here. Anyway, that's my "schpleel", looking forward to learning about this art from you all.

    Welcome to SRP!
read all you can watch the videos and when you are comfortable, take the plunge. just make sure you get your razor and strop from a well regarded vendor, the price vary considerably from about $40us to $200us+ all depending on your personal tastes and budget, i always suggest people start on the lower end of the price spectrum, knowing that in time they will be out there searching for the perfect $2000us custom made razor. it is all a fun trip. and for the record you are more prone to damaged your first strop and razor then any other, the learning curve is steep, might as well make them affordable they will shave as well and and strop nearly as nice as the expensive ones.
you will also find that we are extremely veteran friendly. many here have served and more have children currently serving. (soon to be adult stepchildren are USMC, US Army and US Navy, SWMBO=10yrs USMC)

    enjoy,
    jim

Zephyr, pixel, Jim thanks for the welcomes! This forum is a real gem, that's for sure. Jim, you're advice is tremendously appreciated. Thank you so very much.

Pixel, I'm currently in Monrovia, just about 25 minutes (too close) east of Los Angeles. I take it your in California as well?

Edit: Ah, I could have simply viewed your profile Pixel. San Jose I see. Looking to move further north myself.
