Thanked: 0Hello from Texas
Found this site after a multi-year fascination with straight razors has culminated in my first purchase. I went with the Dovo best blade starter kit from vintage blades.
Part of this has stemmed from getting tired of spending what I would call unreasonable prices for blades and not being able to achieve that baby smooth finish I'm after. However, as a testament to what we will do for our daughters, the main reason I'm hear is to learn how to have a baby smooth shave because my 4 year old doesn't like feeling whiskers on my face.
I went with the 6/8 Dovo Best and will be looking for guidance on soaps and creams.
Thanks very much and looking forward to learning a lot from the members here.

Welcome to SRP!
glad to hear that you went straight , pleasing daughters though is nearly impossible. i trust you also ordered up a strop form somebody as well... to start with you just need a basic leather one , fancy can come later.
soaps and creams are open to so many choices... i love floris and tabac soaps but also have the big 3T's in both cream and soap.. trumper's, taylor's and trufitt&hill
you will need to try a sample pack or two from various makers to find a daughter pleasing one.... lime might be it.... trufitt&hill lime smells like the lime lifesaver, or it did to my womenfolk
enjoy,
jim

Mitchells Wool Fat is my favorite shave soap. Cella is nice.

Thanked: 1263Welcome to SRP. Just keep in mind the learning curve and that you probably wont get that BBS shave overnight...but it'll come and when it does you'll realize it was all worth it

Hey friend, good to see another Texan on board. I'm originally from San Antonio. I'm out here in SoCal now, but my heart is with Grandma in San Anoton'. Welcome and enjoy, ask questions, watch videos, and read, read, read! The guys here know tons. I started out with a Dovo Best Quality too. A great razor! Good luck and have fun!

Hello and a big welcome to another Texan! The best thing about shaving with straight razors is that they are so much fun.

Thanked: 0Thanks everyone - I'm in Houston and it looks like there's a fair number of people from around the state here.
I've done enough reading to be thoroughly confused at this point, but I did get the "World of Straight Razor Shaving" DVD with the starter kit so hopefully that'll answer any last minute questions before I dive in.
I also found the beginner's article from Lynn and I'm glad I did - otherwise, I'd have just started on the whole face and I'm sure would have made a mess of things.
See you guys around the forum,

Welcome twomarks!
Just keep an eye on the 30 degree angle, proper stretching of skin and take it slow.
Enjoy the ride and many well shaves!
