As I said in my post, liljohn, I've gone about twelve months with stropping alone, however, I've also been restoring and honing my own razors that I have used.
I have kept John's razor as my 'control' and have only used it about once a month.
It is only just starting to tug a little going ATG.
If you stuff up your stropping you can ruin the edge on your first shave.
I believe you're going the right way practicing on an old blade to get the flip happening.
Hope this helps.

For longevity of the edge, also consider the steel hardness of the individual razor, if you let it rust , ding it, drop it or cut old jeans with it .
Don't laugh I've seen the latter posted before.

Thanked: 0Evening Gents,
Just received my first two straights in the mail - sadly, an iPhone doesn't do them justice.
Thanks again for all the advice and a special thanks to Johnmrson, Havachat45 and Onimaru55 for getting me started on the right track. Just waiting on my strop now and I'll be able to have my first shave!

Thanked: 485Hi there!
Can you get a Norton 5/8? I've got a 4/8, I quite like it. I also have a Shapton 16k. In hindsight, it's possible I've also have like a 4, 8 and 16 k Shapton rather than the Norton, though generally I use the 16k most of the times, and need to use the Norton much less.
I hope you have fun...
Carl
