    Default Hello From Okinawa, Japan

I'm currently in Okinawa Japan, but i'm from Edinburg, TX.

A month ago my wife bought me a Dovo 5/8 Carpe Diem with a 2in Strop from Straight Razor Designs. She knew i was frustrated and bored with disposable razors. My first day of shaving was TERRIBLE nicked my strop and i didnt even finish the shave. The next was a litte better i still didnt finsh the shave. THen it started to click, kinda, now i can go through a whole shave its not Baby Butt smooth yet but tis getting there. Everyday at work im thinking about how i can make the next shave better. Now I want a paddle strop from straight razor designs and i want more straight razors. it is a complete addiciton. My routine I take a hot shower, Then i use the cotton for 20 strokes then I do about 75 strokes on the leather. I use AoS sandalwood pre shave, Aos Sandal wood cream, AoS post shave sandal wood. My face can't handle 3 passes so I on;y do with the grain and across the grain.

Thanks to the wife and thanks to the whole straight razor community being awesomely nice.

Welcome to SRP davilafam07 and I'm glad things are getting better for you.
Nicking strops is fairly standard practice.
I always suggest to people that they place the strop on a bench or other flat surface until they get the flip and pressure correct and SLOW down a bit when stropping.
All the videos make it look so easy until you try it and nick the strop.
Slow and steady for the first little while and speed will come to you later.
Same goes for the shave itself - don't rush and enjoy the experience.

Hello davilafam07 and welcome to the forum. I couldn't agree more with Havachat45 take you time, dont rush and enjoy this incredibly cool and extreamely rewarding skill. Your shaves will get better over time as your technique develops. I hope this will make you feel better, I have been shaveing with straights for about 4-1/2 years, and I still nick a strop now and again. Everyone does.
Have Fun, and Dont Give Up!!!!!

It's not just shaving anymore, it's your latest hobby/interest. Welcome and go for the SRD paddle strop, you will love it! Get the English bridle pad if you like more draw. Enjoy!

Agreed, nicking the strop is customary for noobs, it gets better, but hell I just put a nick in my walking horse EB last week. I wont even mention the name of the razor I was using. It would cause carnage. Lesson learned.

As far as nicking your face goes? Skin changes weight fluctuates even the best laid plans can fail. I hadnt used my styptic pencil in over a year and 4 days ago I cut my ear....MY FLIPPING EAR!!! I had been so proud that I never cut my ear and damn if I didnt put that C-Mon spike into my ear. So I think eh its a fluke right? you have 200+ shaves under your belt that was an isolated incident.....2 days ago I took a little slice of skin off my flippin adams apple. I was getting complacent with my shaving and my razor reminded me that if you dont pay attention there will be blood....

Your not alone. This crap happens from time to time. Just study up, practice as much as possible, and dont sweat the mistakes. Learn move on enjoy the life style

Ok, so I read past our new razor fiend's thread subject, Adam. I blame the slow Monday afternoon and a distinct lack of caffeine in my system.

    LMAO!

I too had forgotten its title and was merely pointing out we are a bunch of degenerate addicts who would without our pretty razors/strops/hones and beautifully perfumed lotions/creams/soaps walk the world like zombies shaking looking for sharp objects to play with while digging rocks out of the ground and trying to skin cows/horses/the odd kangaroo......it would be mayhem!!!

    Hey Tex,

Hang in there. You're off to a nice start with some fine gear. It'll fit together for ya before you know it.
