Default New Member From Duluth, Minnesota!

I just purchased my first straight razor and am waiting to get it in the mail. I decided to go with a restored E.A.B. given my Swedish roots and the nostalgia of knowing the blade was made by true craftsman, not machines. I don't plan on actually shaving with it until I have the rest of my setup (I need a strop, soaps, brush, etc.), but I wanted to get my hands on an E.A.B. in good condition and I jumped at the opportunity.

Any advice on equipment would be greatly appreciated and for you fellow Minnesota honemeisters out there I would be willing to trade a jar of homemade glasmastarsill for a good honing when the time comes...

I had to look up "glasmastarsill" contrary to public opinion, not all of us Minnesotans are Swedish!

Welcome to SRP! I have an Erik Anton Berg 4/8 faux frameback with ivory scales. Beautiful little razor and it gives a wonderful shave!

Some members recommend a cheap 2" strop for beginners, because so many of us manage to nick or slice our strops while first learning how to use them. The other school of thought suggests that a 3" strop is better for newcomers to learn on, because it does not involve learning how to incorporate an "X" stroke while stropping.

I gave it some thought and decided to go with a 3" strop. The nicks I inflicted on it were easily repaired with rubber cement. Others were not so lucky, so give that choice some thought. And ask questions when the need arises.
    Namaste,
    Morty -_-

Thanks for the salutations. I'm looking forward to getting started with straight razors. I'm in my early 30's with two young boys so I'm looking at the straight razor as a once a week comfort and relaxation period. I'll be sure to get in touch with you folks since I'll probably have lots of questions starting out. There are a lot of great posts on here for beginners!

Welcome! Swedish razors are nice. Here is a razor and hone with the Duluth motor bridge! The founder was from Duluth, but made his razors in Marionette, Wisconsin! Lots of info here!

Welcome to SRP. Happy to have you aboard.

I'm sure that the once a week goal will be met--and then some. Once you get comfortable using a straight razor you will want to shave with one more than once a week.

Nice set! One of my goals is to find some Aerial Cutlery pieces myself. It would be great finding a straight razor that ties in locally, reminds me a lot of Marble Arms Co. and their cutlery.
