Glad to have you! There are several guys from the KC area...not too far away at all. Forget about honing for a bit...learn to shave and strop first, then jump right in on honing...water is fine.

i know honing is really tought to get the hang of but i dont have the money for a shave ready razor right now and shipping my great grand fathers razor in mail to have it made shave ready is out of the question for obvious reasons lol. really id love to have a different razor to use and learn with but just not in funding right now. the strop i have is one that i made from thick leather and made my own hardware. how important is it to have an actuall strop? i have stroped knives, which are way different from a razor on a simple leather belt and works fine but will my strop work ok or not?

Welcome to SRP. Post a picture or two of your "strop" that way we can let you know if it will work. As for shipping your great grandfather's razor to have it honed, I would still send it out to be honed, just make sure to purchase the additional insurance and delivery confirmation. The few extra dollars will be well spent. I know it may seem odd to send out an heirloom razor to a stranger on the internet, but rest assured the gentlemen on this forum are top notch. Spend some time in the Customs/Rebuilt forums and you'll get an idea ofhow many members do amazing work. I have an heirloom razor that will be handed down to my son when he is old enough to shave, it will be his great great grandfather's razor. I sent it out to be restored and honed by Glen, aka Gssixgun, and I can say his work and communication with members here is stellar. I have also had a few razors honed by other members here and have been completely satisfied with each member's work. If you change your mind, check the classifieds here, look into the member services and send a few PM's and decide what is right for you. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Well yes you can strop a razor on a leather belt or practically any smooth leather surface, you can even use newspaper. the shave ready razor can be had for as little $25 from one of the vendors it may not be the prettiest thing but it will be sharp.
as for restoring your granddad's razor there are many vendors in the corner who can do the work. look in the gallery and custom sections as rearden suggests.
of course pictures you your stuff would be nice.

    enjoy,
    jim
