    Default New straight shaver

I've been at this for a week now. I was having problems with stropping and ran across the stropping tutorial while browsing. The tutorial is absolutely fantastic and helped me solve my problem (I was stropping too slowly). After butchering myself pretty good the first few shaves, I realized there's much more to straight razor shaving than I ever imagined. Challenging, but rewarding!

    Oh yeah...my razors right now:

    • Whipped dog special (I'm going to use this to learn honing/sharpening)
    • Winchester No. 8533 (practically brand new)
    • A. Paulaitis (weighs a ton)

My next purchase will be a set of honing stones.

Did you watch the stropping vid on the SRP main page? It will also help you.

    Welcome to the forum!

Yes I did. The sound clips also helped...they gave me a cadence to follow. Once I got that down, it all seemed to come together. Hopefully tomorrow's shave will be better.

The whipped dog came shave ready. When I stropped for the first few times, I dulled the blade, so I've been using that razor to get my stropping technique right. I don't want to mess up my nicer razors learning how to strop and hone. I'd rather use the whipped dog until I master those skills.

The other two razors are also shave ready. I found the Winchester in an antique shop and all it required was a strop on .5 and .1 micron balsa/paste board to get it sharp.
