Thanked: 1Hello from Myrtle Beach
My name is Bob and I'm a straight shaving newbie. I discovered wet shaving from the standpoint of using a brush and double-edged razor about 2 years ago. I moved to preferring injector type razors and took up straights about 2 months ago and love it. I haven't touched anything but a straight since then and even sold off my Cobra Classic.
I have a 1200 synthetic stone, a small Jnat, a barber's hone, and a bunch of lapping film.
I had a great shave today with a razor that I honed yesterday after watching one of Lynn's videos. I had tried honing it the day before and got an pretty bad shave as a result. After watching Lynn I was able to get a nice edge on the razor and had an awesome shave this morning.
The only problem with watching that video is that I feel very lacking in the rocks department. I'm trying to sell a fountain pen in order to fund some more rock or razor purchases.
Anyway, I've enjoyed reading some of the forums on here and look forward to hanging around.

Thanked: 1936First off, we are glad to have you!
Second, you don't have to have a "collection" of stones to get a razor where it needs to be. A Norton combination 4/8K or Naniwa 3/8K will handle pretty much whatever comes your way with your 1200.
Something that I typically recommend is that you have a razor that is honed by a pro to use as a reference blade. If you have stones to 8K, then you can ask the pro to stop at 8K so that you can compare apples to apples.
Keep at it and if I can ever be of assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me.
