    Default Hello everybody!

    Hi, I'm Tony from Montreal.
I'm just excited to start this hobby, I just received today my first razor from the mail (the mailman thinks I'm crazy because I was giggling like schoolgirl!). It's a Dovo special 5/8. right now, I don't believe I've read so much on a forum or watched that much You tube since I've decided to give my Gilette the boot!
I'll let you guys know how the first shave went

Hi, Tony, and welcome to SRP! Glad you decided to take the plunge and join up. Dovos make very good razors for beginners. I believe you when you say that you were all atwitter of heart in anticipation of its arrival!
Now for the nitty-gritty: what kind of strop, brush, and soap do you have or plan on using? We'd love to hear the details. Pics of them are always welcome! You will find everything you want to know about cutthroat shaving here, especially when the senior members of SRP speak up. In closing,
    GO LEAFS GO!
(Or, when they don't make the playoffs
    GOLF LEAFS GOLF!

hello Leafs' fan (imagine a menacing voice! haha!)
    thanks for the welcoming message!
Right now I get my stuff piece by piece (budget's kinda tight) so next on my list is a TI paddle strop. as for what I already have: an Omega synthetic brush from the pharmacy I'm not crazy about it but it does the job. And I've been using the Proraso cream and aftershave. The brush and cream, I've been using for a year and a half more or less, to "prepare" for when I'd have a cutthroat. so my only skill for now is making a pretty nice lather (it's not much but hey!). Now I guess I need to find a honemeister in Montreal...
I... just noticed your puttin' on the foil reference! nice!
Before I leave I hope both our teams don't pick so early in the 2013 draft!

Hey, Tony. Welcome, and let the mailman think whatever he wants. You're gonning be loving your shaves - and he isn't.

Just enjoy. There's lots to be distracted by. Its easy to be overwhelmed by all the details and small stuff. For now - get so you can make good lather & do good beard prep. Learn the detailed topography of you face and the lay of your beard, and especially how to strop well. Glen's 3/11 Beginner's thread is probably the best I've seen on stropping.

'hope to hear more from you soon - let us know how the first shave went. I'm assuming the Dovo was honed by the seller. If not, there are excellent guys up your way that can help w/ the edge. I'd gladly do so for just the postage cost, but it seems going across the border takes a long time. I don't have a feel for how far away you are from Maxi, but his work was been well spoken of.

    Have a ton of fun!

First thing's first: I'm not a Leafs FAN in the common sense of the term. Re-read my screen name.
Second: The Habs will (probably) make the playoffs before the Leafs do.
Third: I do not foresee the Leafs earning the right to drink from the Holy Grail for at least 5 years, probably more like 10. Although, if the friggin' Kings did it, there's still hope. "All we are saying...Is Give Leafs A Chance!" -Chris Berman, 1994.
Fourth: What the heck is up w/Youppi?!? Couldn't the Expos have taken him along to Washington?
Okay, rant is over. Gettin' off the
Most rookies acquire their gear piecemeal -- I did. Many SRP members love Proraso products. You know how to lather up. It sounds like you've got some good skills going for you already! SRP has members in the Montreal area, so finding a honemeister nearby shouldn't be a problem. I know of several SRP members in the Toronto area who do honing as well. I'm sure if you asked them NICELY (and agreed to wear a Leafs sweater to the Habs' home opener this October!) they'd help you out.
Good to have another Canadian on board! We just might take over this site! After all, we lead the world in Zamboni production!! Free beer and healthcare for all!!!!!
See you in the trenches, buddy!

Welcome Tony - and don't mind our foiled-up friend. After all, the Jets will triumph before either the Leafs or Habs. And by triumph I obviously mean make the playoffs... let's not be greedy.

And as for the mailman, odds are that you will be on a first-name basis once the RAD hits!

There is - or at least was a couple of years ago - a honer in Mtl who did a fine job on my blade back before I started doing the deed myself. I don't recall him being a member on this forum though. Anyway, if you can't find someone local make sure you do send it to be honed by a pro as that will make a world of difference.

Good luck and welcome to SRP!
