Thanked: 0Gabe from the Texas Coast
Hello,
My name is Gabe and, as the title says, I'm from the Texas coast near Corpus Christi. I'm brand new to straight razors. I recently started my search for a razor. Initially I was thinking about getting a "restore project", however after buying a couple, I am thinking I'll want to go with a "shave ready blade" and keep the two I've bought on the side.
I actually was able to find a Dubl Duck, Pearlduck that needs some restoration for $15 at a local antique shop and another blade marked "Jos. A. Levinson; Louisville, KY" for $10 on Craigslist. I'm pretty sure that I can make the scales for the DD. The problem with it is that it has a VERY SLIGHT flat spot at the very end of the point where it looks like it must have been dropped. I can't imagine that is uncommon on 60 year old blades. The scales on the Levinson seem like they are in decent condition. The blade on the Levinson, although not pitted, has a pretty decent frown. I'll post pics soon.
I've reached out to Lynn on this via email before I joined the forum, but anyone have any advice on a good place to find a shave ready blade for around $50 bucks or so? I don't want to learn on, and possibly ruin during the process, a three figure blade...
Thanks,
Gabe

Thanked: 334Hi, Gabe, and welcome to SRP! Whippeddog.com has "sight unseen" deals for razors that approximate your monetary requirements. From what I've read about them here on SRP, it's a good deal because it is a truly shave-ready razor. The prevailing opinion of them seems to be "They aren't pretty, but they get the job done."
Another option is to contact Glen (gssixgun here on SRP) at GemStar Customs. He occasionally has razors that fit your description. And you can always try the Vendors Corner and the Classifieds sections here on SRP.
I hope this helps you out, and I'll see you in the trenches, buddy!

Thanked: 2209Are you near Baytown, TX? If so then contact Bob Allman. He is a custom razor maker and a really good guy.

There are also 2 others who have corpus christi as a "location" in their profile.

I grew up on the coast right by Galveston. Still go back one a year or so. I love it down there. Miss the salt water.
Welcome!
