Thanked: 8Greetings
Another newbie in a quest for more information. Every four or five years since I was in my 20's I have decided to begin shaving with a straight razor. In the past I quickly gave up, usually chickening out after one swipe down my cheek. This time I am sticking with it and have been using a straight for the past 3 weeks. I know that a real driver behind my success this time is the wealth of information on SRP. Thank you! I have a modest number of razors (half a dozen that will shave) and 4 more that I had gotten on ebay with the plan of restoring them sometime in the future.
Well, as I have done with many things in my life, I am throwing myself into this, buoyed by my modest success so far. I have gotten fair at stropping (tho lots to learn!). I have been interested in all things sharp for decades so have a number of stones and hones including a Norton 4/8K. Now I've ordered a Naniwa 12K with a goal of finishing some of what I started in the past. I'll practice and learn on some of the restorers before I touch any of my shaving grade razors.
Thank you very much for all this information, without which this would have been one more aborted attempt. Since I am currently trying to slow my life down, SR shaving seemed even more appropriate at this juncture.

Thanked: 443Hi Mumpig,
we've met in another thread already, but if I didn't welcome you there I'll be sure to do it here.
The Naniwa 12k is a wonderful hone, surprisingly fast for as fine as it is. Time on it is wasted, though, if you're not completely done with your 8k. Conventional wisdom here, too, is that you shouldn't go to a finer hone until you can consistently get a comfortable shaving edge from your 8k anyway.
The straight shave is a celebration of slower life. You've picked a good hobby."These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."
