Thanked: 7 1700s, Early 1800s Razor
OK, here we go.
I picked this razor up on Ebay as it looked special.
It has horn scales patterned like Tortoiseshell and I would say late 1700s or early 1800s but any comments on the date appreciated.
The razor looks to be very little used and comes in original mahogany box and even the outer card box that's tatty.
The outer box is marked 'Portable Razors - Made of the Best Sheffield Steel'
The razor is marked ELLI and the Mahogany Box has Mc Pherson Brothers Cutlers Glasgow.
The Silver Travel Brush is Hallmarked 1833 so I thought it made a good companion being of the same period. Hard to believe these are around 200 years old.
The razor still shaves arm hair and I'll be honing it and using it.

Yes, me too.
I've emailed the Glasgow Industrial Museum Archives department to ask if they have any information on McPherson Brothers - they seemed to make quite a lot of metal items sucha as razors, whistles, cutlery etc and they also bought in razors etc and rebranded them too. This razor was obviously made in Sheffield for them but I'd love to be able to accurately date it.
