Thread: New guy from Iowa

I just wanted to stop by to say Hello. I have learned a ton just browsing through the forums here, I can't wait to get things rolling. I have always been interested in straights and shaving with them, but have just recently acquired my first razor. I'm of to do a little more research and wait for some supplies to arrive, if I have any questions you guys will be the first to know. Thanks for what you all do here, it's a great resource.

Welcome to SRP Jason. I just saw your other thread with a picture of the razor from the estate sale. It appears to be in good shape. Check the classifieds here and click on "Member Services" and you'll see a host of gentlemen here who offering honing sevices. PM (private message) a few and send it out to be properly honed to shave readiness, your face will thank-you. Ask any questions that come up as the gentlemen of this forum are always willing to help a new member start down the right path towards shaving nirvana.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know if it is going to need to be honed. It is wicked sharp already and easily took the hair off my arm. I'm hoping to just give it a go on the strop and see what happens.

welcome - I live in Davenport Iowa for three years as a child and still love that state and go back whenever I can.

I strongly agree with Reardensteel, send that razor out for a professional honing. The reason why is that steel starts to oxidize right away and becomes "soft". That means that the razor will not hold its edge. The "old steel" along the edge needs to be honed off and back to good, strong steel that will hold an edge.
Whenever we hear that a new guy has a vintage razor from wherever this is the reason we tell them to send it out for a pro honing.
