Long time lurker
Hi everybody, I'm a 45 years old "newbie"... (I must confess that I love that word; it makes me feel younger) and I've been a wetshaver since day one (when my upper lip got some fuzz that I called a "mustache").
Until a few weeks ago, I was pretty happy with my DE... but then I found this place... wow, just wow: the pictures, the discussions, the pictures and all those pictures!!!... those straights razors look really good.
Just a couple of minutes ago I pulled the trigger with a whippeddog kit (according with what I've been reading here the whippeddog is a good starting point)
I am a typical DIY fan. Most of My tools are hand tools. I would never buy a chain saw or electric screw driver, but I do own an electric drill.
I am very exited about the idea of doing things the original (best ?) or old fashion way instead of using modern tools. In the old days things where idealistic; workers took time to do things properly because time had less value, and tools where manufactured to the extreme. Today most tools are computer designed from other criteria; Production costs should be minimized, and profit should be maximized.
That is why I decided to shave the old school way: the straight way.
However, I have just fallen in love with the Thiers-Issard crown Silverwing straight razor. This is a hand made razor, and it make drool like the Pavlov's dog; get it is now my goal
I think I will be using My DE razor most of the days, and the straight razor in the weekends, where time has no value and, hopefully, my wounds will be healed by Monday :-)
I have been reading a lot in this forum... checking every wiki and reading every piece of advice that a newbie can get.
I still got more than just a few questions, but I'll end my presentation here.
Cheers.

First of all, welcome to the forums! There are plenty of people(I'm not included) who know ALMOST all there is to know about Wet-Shaving.
You can't go wrong with a TI razor, let alone a hand-made one! Seems like a good goal to have set!
Did that whippeddog kit include a strop? Stropping is King when it comes to a straight razor!

Landri,
Welcome to SRP! Your link to the TI goes to some kind of key, but I suspect the razor is one of the new Carbonsong razors from TI. They are very good razors and the Carbonsong steel is quite hard and will hold a good edge. Parker is right, ask and someone or someone's will help in any way they can. Read a lot, and enjoy!! Glad to have you on board!
Regards,
Howard

Thanked: 443Welcome, Landri! Enjoy your Whippeddog set and don't rush into the TI until you've had a chance to handle one. I was sorely tempted by one about a year ago but was lucky to handle one at a meetup. Gorgeous blade but for me, somehow, the ergonomics weren't there. That saved me about $450 worth of sad.
Like you, I love old human-powered tools--I do yardwork with a scythe--but I also make my living with hand tools and my Bosch electric screwdriver is the best purchase (but for a razor or two) I've made in the last three years.
Deerhunter--haven't seen you around for a while. Good to see you back.
