Thanked: 15Hello, I'm Josh, and I have R.A.D
Hi everyone. So despite the fact that I've been trolling these pages like gollum looking for the ring, I haven't properly introduced myself. I have posted a few times but I noticed this section and thought it would be a good idea to say hello. I've been shaving with a str8 for about 2 months now and I'm starting to get the hang of it. And what I mean by that is that I have stopped cutting myself frequently and missing spots.
RAD.... So I had seen RAD mentioned a number of times and hadn't quite figures out what it meant... So I looked it up. Im happy yo say that i suffer from rad. Last weekend I picked up my first old razor... Within 4 days I acquired 9 more. I also bought a hone, flattening stone and various other things razor related. The guys at work think im nuts. My wife froze my assets. And all I want to do is wander around antique stores
Well that's me and my hello. I'm glad to be a part of this really fun and slightly obsessive community.

Josh, you sound so so normal!
I don't know if the 'Portland' part of your screen name means Oregon. If it does, we should connect. Another Vancouver resident was over last wkend for the 2nd time. The first time, he went home w/ 2 blades honed. Last time, he got to try 8 blades of different sizes and grinds so he knows how each feels - without having to buy and sell a bunch of blades. I'm honing 3 more blades for him now.
This is gonna sound a bit like a wet blanket on your excitement, but I'd recommend not chasing ebay or antique store blades for some time to come (maybe 6 mo.) I know that's a bummer to hear, but theres some REALLY good reasons.
Is the blade you bought professionally honed? The quality of that edge makes a huge difference in your learning curve. New guys need better edges than an experienced shaver. Trying to learn w/ marginal edges will hold back your shaving skills. You can imagine how I might know that. That's why I'm called pinklather.
Anyway, Welcome, bravo for taking the plunge, and you've definitely hit the motherload of good help. If you are, indeed, in the Portland (OR) metro area, lets connect. PM me.
