hello from newcastle upon tyne
howdo everyone. i had been using a badger brush and soap for over a year then it dawned on me to look on youtube how to actually use it propally. that is when i learned about safety razors so i thought i would purchase one as i always ended up with big red spots on my face which it didnt even occur to me it would be from using a multi blade mach 3 (my mum said it was because i ate too much chocolate and drank too much gin). well i used a safety razor for like a week before i delved into cutthroats. that was in july and now here i am.
so cheers everyone to blemish free bbs faces all around.
all the best

Welcome! I used a boar brush and Williams Mug Soap with a cartridge razor for 10 years before I learned how to use it properly, and before I tossed the cartridges and switched to straights (thanks to my wife). Now, 9 months later, I still remember how uncomfortable some of those shaves were, and worse, how I regretted purchasing new cartridges. I somehow knew it was not money well spent. Anyhow, glad you are here!

wow thankyou everyone for a warm welcome. so here goes for my first question. i have the £85 dovo razor with faux tortoiseshell plastic resin scales. after every four or so shaves the pivot comes loose and the the blade swings dangerously so i have to keep hammering it. the toe of the razor catches the scales on one side as well so i need to precision the blade back in. does this situation imrove dramatically with better material scales?

do you always tap the pin on the same side? and what are you tapping with and on? some misaligned scales can be corrected by tapping on the pin from the the opposite side. however, they should not be coming loose after 4 shaves. you might have bent the pin.
