[QUOTE=Scookum;1026894]My dining table is full of bits of spent sandpaper, used rags, small pieces of wood half forged into what looks like straight razor scales, pencils, sponges, varnish, wd-40, straight razor blades without scales. By the sink in my kitchen i have a full blown sharpening station set up with all my hones, DMT for lapping, rags, a little microscope and a beer.

May I surmise you are without SWMBO? Swiss Miss would be using one of my razors for an entirely different purpose. If you don't care where you are, you are not lost.

Thanked: 1Wow! My wife would kill me if I had all that stuff out. lol hmmm....now to decide if I will take some good advice and either buy a shave ready razor or send mine out for a honing....OR....use that money to invest in a 8K Norton. I truly believe my life would be easier/better with an 8K in my hand. .....and I still have to buy that strop!
At least once I get past the initial investment I won't have to....awe....who am I kidding? The "next purchase syndrome" never ends does it????
Thanks for all the great advice guys. Maybe I'll do the right thing....but it's tempting not to.

Being a bit serious now, do yourself a favour and send that razor to a professional honer. Buy yourself a strop, not too expensive because if you are like the rest of us you will chop it to pieces while learning. Resist honing until you have picked up a second razor to practice on, you can compare your honing to your "good" razor. There are a lot of very useful videos in the video section, everything from stropping to honing, watch them all 10 times each, then start practicing. Your face will thank you for it

Thanked: 1Sounds like solid advice Scookum. Guess I need to break down and send it in to someone....I just hate the idea of not having it here and having to shave with the DE again. I'm sure a couple of weeks wouldn't kill me...

I'm a relative newbie to straights and sent all my straights out for honing to Glen Mercurio of Welcome GemStar Customs - Gem Star Customs. Glen does excellent work. Your face will thank you for it.
If it were me, I'd send them both out at the same time for honing and save a little postage.
