    Default Hello from Indiana, USA

Greetings. I hale from the northern area of Indiana near Chicago and am just about to delve into the world of straight razor shaving.

Most of my adult life has been with a beard in one form or another. When a shave periodically happened it involved the use of a cartridge-o-matic razor. Lately I have been clean shaven to the surprise of many who asked if I have a court date. lol A few years ago a Merkur safety razor set came into use which has worked well. I did successfully try a Shavette about that time with only a few nicks. The problem with that was the blade would always move around in it's holder as I used it.

Lately I've been perusing the net gaining info on the subject of straight razor shaving and came across this site.

While at a gun & knife show this past weekend I decided to get a vintage Shumate straight razor. The price was less than the cost of a professional hone so I figured what the heck. I will try to post some pictures to get everyone's opinion of it's usefullness.

Hello and welcome, this site has been a huge help to me shaving, restoration, and so on. Has the razor been honed for you? If not, I would highly suggest getting it done by one of the guys in the vendors section, so you have an idea of what you should expect from a shave ready razor, and don't be surprised if you try it and like it that you start sectioning off your paycheck for just razors and the like... Everyone here is willing and eager to help so remember, there are no stupid questions only stupid people who don't ask.

Just thought of something as well; if you don't have a case or sheath for your razor yet, and it's not some big 8/8 honker; the travel toothbrush holders at wally world for $0.99 work great, I keep some of the ones I am working on in those when not messing with them.

Thanks. I'm from the "region" just at the southern tip of Lake Michigan. I posted some pics of the Shumate in the beginner's section.
