Thanked: 275Here's the quote, from theSuperiorShave.com , discussing the Merkur Progress:
Use the varied adjustments for your passes of the blade, letting Progress' heavy head do the work while gently moving over the skin. Start with an aggressive (higher) number for the standard down-the-face first pass, reduce the setting for an across-the-face pass, and if you're bold go for an up-the-face pass with the dial marked way down in the timid range.

PS -- there's a thread in Badger and Blade that talks about the Futur. It seems that "1" on the Futur is more aggressive than an EJ DE89. An EJ DE89 will give a BBS shave if you use an ATG pass. So you might want to dial-down your setting.. . . . . Mindful shaving, for a better world.

Yes - actually after seeing your post I did a bunch of poking around to find out that for a first DE razor, I probably chose the worst Sounds like I chose one of the most aggressive blades. Couple that with a setting that seems way too high, Feather blade and a tendency to get cut really easily and I'm amazed I still do it! I will definitely play with the settings.

Oh man - world of difference. I'm still trying to learn the straight so I'm going back to my DE for my final ATG pass. I just now set it to 1 for these final passes and I was able to get very close and not a single nick. This is probably the second time EVER which I didn't have to pull out the styptic pencil!
