Thanked: 0Hello!
So, I decided to take the plunge into straight razor shaving. I've been doing a lot of research, and after I move (and expenses settle back down) I'm going to be ordering this. Are there any opinions on the straight razor that comes with the kit? I don't have access to the reviews page, so I can't really look there.
Thanks for all the articles! It makes the prospect of slicing my own throat much more remote!

Hello, and welcome to SRP!
You seem to have done your homework, so the chance you'll slice yourself is considerably lessened That set looks fine to me, that's a nice razor, the only thing is that the strop might be a little narrow. Personally, I prefer strops 2.5" wide. I find the extra width makes a difference. I know StraightRazorDesigns offer sets as well, and I think they have optional wider strops.
Have fun, and let us know how it goes!

Welcome to SRP!
refreshing to see new people who have done their homework. much like str8fencer i like a wider strop they give support to more of the blade and seem to make it easier to keep the razor falt on the strop so that you get an effective stroke. the narrower stops mean more strokes as well to achieve the proper edge.
so is the plan to be ready for a thanksgiving shave?

Welcome to the forum. Wealth of information to be had here, and many, many helpful folks not too proud to share with us novices. I know you will like the razor. When I first started I would experience a blood letting at each shave. I bought a Dovo like you are getting and I was quite surprised how my technique improved, and my blood loss diminished. It is still in my rotation, and it goes into my shave kit when traveling. There is NO way I would go back to using anything but a SR. Sooner you start, the sooner you will understand.
Any day on this side of the flowers is a good day!

Hello, that seems to be a good set up for 170.00, the tuff cloth alone is about 9.00, and the precision applicator is between 10-12 I think....its at classicshaving.com. The thin strop might be a bugger at first, but if you can learn on that, then any others will be a piece of cake.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.

Thanked: 0Thank you for all the warm welcomes!
Closer to Christmas if I'm reading everything right. Mr. Lynns article is very informative.
I'll probably have everything in November (gotta get the moving bills settled down, get a good idea on what the bills are going to be at my new place) just to ensure I'm not spending money I need to feed my son. So I'm planning on having a good solid shave by Christmas / New Years.
