Welcome from a fellow newbie who's maybe a few weeks ahead of you, and from a fellow sandgroper, though I've moved temporarily to the bad-weather-city to escape the hi-viz. I can tell you, I tried honing for the first time recently on a synthetic stone, and damned if it wasn't difficult. Still haven't produced a sharp edge. Good luck.
